Slow Food: Re-inhabiting the New England Landscape

February 9

Eating directly from the field and garden deepens our connections with the land around us. The way we eat expresses who we are and what we value; in the words of Slow Food founder Carlo Petrini, food should be “good, clean and fair”. In 20 years the Slow Food movement has grown from a small Italian organization devoted to preserving culinary traditions and the pleasures of the table to 80,000 members in over 100 countries. Join David Buchanan, leader of the Portland, Maine chapter; to hear how Slow Food is changing the way we eat and think about our food. His talk will include photos from the 2006 Terra Madre gathering of world food producers in Turin, Italy, and a recent trip to Argentina to design and construct kitchen gardens. ** Part of our Food & the Environment program series. 8 pm

Soul of the Bayou

February 10

Previously booked for February 3rd, the subdudes and BeauSoleil show has been moved to February 10 due to the Super Bowl conflict. Seems like no one wanted to give up Superbowl Sunday and our friends from the South did not want to play to a small house. Their management pulled many strings, and generously moved the show, so none of us will have to compete with the big game. ... Since forming in 1975, Grammy winners BeauSoleil have claimed their undisputed role as the most esteemed Cajun group in music. BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet take the rich Cajun traditions of Louisiana and artfully blend elements of zydeco, New Orleans jazz, Tex-Mex, country, blues and more into a satisfying musical recipe. In 1987, four musicians got together for what they envisioned would be a one-time performance at the New Orleans' landmark, Tipitina's. Nearly two decades later, the subdudes are back in a big way with their incredible comeback cd, Behind The Levee (Back Porch / EMI) which spent most of the Spring and Summer this year in the top ten at both Adult Alternative and Americana radio. Produced by bluesman Keb' Mo' the album showcases the band's amazing vocals and truly unique melding of Gospel, Soul, Funk and Folk that makes them a one of a kind American Original. For the first time, two of Louisiana's finest and most critically acclaimed acts join together for an evening celebrating their superb musical tradition.

The Holmes Brothers

February 29

The spine-tingling harmonies, boundless energy and telepathic musicianship of The Holmes Brothers (bassist/vocalist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/pianist/ vocalist Wendell Holmes, drummer/vocalist Popsy Dixon) mix Saturday night's roadhouse rock with the gospel fervor and harmonies of Sunday's church service. These guys are so great. I met them years ago, when we both did the Mountain Stage Radio show....they were awsome!!!! Those chilling harmonies resonate with a passion and conviction matched only by their inspired musicianship and their ability to perform sanctified gospel, low-down roadhouse blues, deep soul, Americana/country and pure pop - all in one set. They've recorded with Van Morrison, Peter Gabriel, Odetta, Phoebe Snow, Willie Nelson, Rosanne Cash, Levon Helm and Joan Osborne, and have gigged all over the world - even performing for President Clinton!
