Getting to Know Series: A Time Before New Hampshire: The Land & Native Peoples, September 27

September 27

Getting to Know Series: A Time Before New Hampshire: The Land & Native Peoples
September 27

Led by Michael J. Caduto, author of A Time Before New Hampshire: The Story of a Land and Native Peoples , this program tells the fascinating story of the forces of nature that helped shape the land and the people who call it their own.  Through stories, slides, music, and an afternoon field trip, you'll learn about the creation of New Hampshire's land, when thousands of years ago, continents collided, seas opened and closed, and mountain ranges rose then fell. The last glacier melted 14,000 years ago and for the past 11,000 years the Alnôbak (Abenaki) and their ancestors have lived here and have survived by relying on their practical needs and spiritual beliefs.

We'll explore the traditional land stewardship of the Alnôbak, the impact they've had on their surroundings, and how the land has, in turn, molded their culture.  During the field trip the group will learn about Native American folklore and traditional uses of wild edible, medicinal, and poisonous plants.  We'll sample wild edibles and share indigenous stories as we hike over easy to moderate terrain around Joe Dodge Lodge.

Participants should come prepared for an afternoon in the outdoors where there might be very warm, cold, wet, windy, and/or buggy conditions. Please plan accordingly with proper footwear and outerwear.

The rate is $42 for AMC Members, $46 for Non-Members, and includes instruction, handouts, transportation to the field site, and lunch.
